Uganda rains on Kenya's parade in series opener

Proscovia Alako’s 21 – ball 27 was a shot in the arm for the hosts as they went down to Uganda by 8 wickets in the opening fixture of the inaugural Kenya Women’s T20 tournament at the Nairobi Gymkhana.

The match hit a sweet sport for Women's Cricket as this would go down in history as the first International Ladies' match to be played at the ground. In the rain affected match that was reduced to ten overs per side, Kenya managed 54 runs on the Board, losing three wickets in the process, including the run out of Sharon Juma for 11 off 10 balls, as Mary Mwangi (13 off 21) went on to top score for Kenya. Venesa Ooko stayed unbeaten on 11 runs off the 8 balls that she managed to face.

In reply, Proscovia Alako and Kevin Awino’s (19) opening stand of 40 runs saw Uganda through 6.5 overs before Immaculate Nakisuuyi did the finishing job, albeit with a bit of a huff in the final two overs that brought the run rate down a notch.

Queentor Abel and Esther Wachira each picked a wicket-a-piece as the Pearl of Africa beauties went on to claim victory with a sole boundary over mid off with two balls left to spare.

Uganda play their next game tomorrow morning against Qatar.
