Alumo stars as Uganda skittle Qatar

Uganda Women made quick work of Qatar’s lowly total of 54 runs to rush home by 8 wickets in just 9.5 overs to record their second win in the second day of the Kenya Women’s T20 tournament at Nairobi Gymkhana.

Uganda lost Proscovia Alako (5) with Shahreennawab Khan’s first ball skittling her stumps in the second over. With the score on 1/6, Janet Mbabazi (23) and Kevin Awino (21) added 39 runs to the second wicket, despite the former falling with just 10 runs left for victory.

However, it was Irene Alumo’s match winning 3/3, inclusive of two maidens that stole the show as Uganda ensured that none of the Qatar batters got to double figures.  Ecstatic about her Man of the Match commendation, she could only state how happy she was. “I started playing cricket in 2005 when I was still a baby and I have never received this award. I’m very happy,” said Alumo.

Shrutiben Rana was the top scorer for Qatar with 8 off 17 balls while Sarah Akiteng and Concy Aweko each picked two wickets-a-piece for Uganda.

Qatar play Tanzania in the afternoon fixture while Uganda will face Tanzania in the second East African affair tomorrow morning at the same venue.
